Rebecca felton was the first woman, a white woman, to hold a seat in the senate. She viewed the civil war as a punishment from god for the sins of cruel masters. The sin the south was being punished for was missegination,. That is to say, white men engaging in sexual relations with black women. And that sin of inter racial rake, or whatever it was - that's what the south wasbeing punished for.
