FDR's Plan to Keep Britain and the Soviet Union in the War
FDR pushed through land lease legislation to keep Britain in the war. State Department is full of anti-communists who would have preferred Hitler to defeat the Soviet Union because they saw the Soviet Union as ultimately the greatest threat. FDR has propped up Britain with weaponry but that's all and financial support I should say. The British are saying look we can't guarantee convoy safety across the North Atlantic. Americans effectively arm their merchants marine and put naval escorts to protect them. Japan decide on this surprise attack on Pearl Harbor as a way to knock out the American Pacific Fleet and to get into the war in order to conquer vast swears of East Asia.
