Christians inherited from the classical tradition of ancient greeks a body of philosophical knowledge dealing with the physical world. Much of this intellectual heritage was absorbed in the metaphysical framework underlying mediaeval christian thought. Monastic orders made education sort of prerequisite to a religious life. The monasteries became the centre of literary culture. Kingsnd emperors would send their kids to the monasteries so they can get educated. As monasticism continued to mature in the following centuries, it store of scientific knowledge also increased.
