Before the Second World War, parenting literature was focused on discipline and feeding babies on a schedule. But after the war we're seeing increasing attention to the quality of emotional life. The idea that the mother should just be continually present holding her child breastfeeding also just her baby as opposed to even considering using a bottle is new.
