Irene: A Tragedy
Book • 1749
Irene is a historical tragedy that dramatizes the love of Sultan Mahomet (Mehmed II) for Irene, a lovely Christian slave captured during the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

The play explores themes of power, duty, and sacrifice as the Sultan becomes so enamored with Irene that he neglects his imperial responsibilities, leading to unrest among his subjects.

Ultimately, to restore order and prove his dedication to his people, the Sultan executes Irene.

The play was first performed in 1749 with the celebrated actor David Garrick in the cast and ran for nine nights.
