Graphic artist Clayton Riddell is in Boston celebrating a comic book deal when The Pulse strikes, transforming cell phone users into savage phoners who attack survivors.

Clay teams up with Tom McCourt and young Alice Maxwell, embarking on a perilous journey north to Maine to find his estranged son Johnny, evading evolving flocks of phoners led by the Raggedy Man and seeking refuge at Kashwak.

Along the way, they encounter other survivors like Jordan, who theorizes the Pulse as a computer worm, amid a crumbling civilization where phoners develop telepathy and other abilities.
