Nana Osei-Opare's book examines Ghana under Kwame Nkrumah as a site where Black freedom, socialism, and Cold War geopolitics intersected.

Drawing on Ghanaian, Soviet, British, and American archives, it traces everyday and high-level interactions across Ghana–Soviet spaces, revealing how race shaped diplomatic and social relations.

The book foregrounds petitions, worker and student experiences, and technocratic projects to show how citizens helped shape state responses to anti‑Black violence and development.

It argues that Ghana's political economy and international alignments must be read through the dual frames of anti‑racism and anti‑capitalism rather than a simple East–West binary.

The work reframes Cold War history by inserting race as a central analytic and by demonstrating the contested nature of liberation across multiple scales.
