Written without rancour despite Philby's betrayal of hundreds of British and US agents, the book charts their 37-year friendship from their meeting at Westminster School in 1925 through Philby's eventual escape to Moscow.

Originally banned by MI6, the memoirs were published posthumously in 2014 after Milne's death in 2010, including newly released classified documents that reveal how Philby managed to evade detection even after defecting.
