Antiquitates Americanae
Book •
Carl Christian Rafn's Antiquitates Americanae is a comprehensive 1837 compilation and study of medieval Icelandic documents related to Norse voyages to the west.
Rafn presented original texts, translations, and commentary arguing that Norse explorers reached parts of North America centuries before Columbus.
The work popularized the Vinland narratives in scholarly and public circles in Europe and North America.
While influential, some of Rafn's geographic speculations and identifications (such as placing Vinland in New England) were later challenged.
The book nonetheless played a key role in reviving interest in the Vinland sagas and prompted further research and, unfortunately, some pseudo-historical responses.
