Children of Heracles

The play depicts Heracles' children, accompanied by Iolaus and Alcmene, fleeing to Athens as suppliants at Zeus's altar in Marathon to escape persecution by King Eurystheus of Argos.

King Demophon grants protection, leading to war; Macaria sacrifices herself, Iolaus is rejuvenated, and Athens triumphs, capturing Eurystheus who prophesies his posthumous protection for the city against the Heraclids.
