Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia around 1905.
Based on Sholem Aleichem's stories about Tevye the Dairyman, the musical follows Tevye, a poor milkman in the shtetl of Anatevka, as he attempts to maintain Jewish religious and cultural traditions while his three older daughters challenge customs by choosing their own husbands for love.
The story also depicts the family's struggle against the Tsar's edict evicting Jews from their village.
The production won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has achieved enduring international popularity through numerous Broadway revivals, a 1971 film adaptation, and countless school and community productions.
