This novel draws from the life of Elizabeth Van Lew, a well-born Richmond woman who posed as 'Crazy Bet' to aid Union prisoners, relay intelligence, shelter fugitives, and orchestrate escapes during the Civil War. Falling in love with Captain Will Franklin, she plans a major coup to liberate the city, raising the Union flag as it falls, though tragedy strikes with personal losses amid Confederate suspicions.
