Global Business and Local Struggle
Book • 2025
Global Business and Local Struggle investigates how non-judicial mechanisms function in addressing human rights harms by transnational businesses, based on five years of field research in Indonesia and India.
The book combines 587 interviews and multi-method analysis to show that while such mechanisms rarely provide standalone remedies, they can be effective when embedded within wider regulatory and political strategies.
It develops a 'field of struggle' theoretical framework to analyse how local actors, state institutions, companies and transnational bodies interact around grievances.
The authors offer practical recommendations for redesigning non-judicial mechanisms and enhancing their strategic usefulness for communities and workers.
The work aims to inform academic debates and policy reform on corporate accountability and human rights remedy.
